Immune System and Bone Regeneration.

چکیده
Kenneth A. Johnson bone, resulting in delayed or non-union is a vexing clinical problem in all species of animals. Recently, the focus of attention in orthopaedics has been on the treatment of fractures by bone grafts, mesenchymal stem cells, growth factors, biomaterials and improved mechanical environment, either alone or in some combination. These therapies have produced clearly demonstrable benefits in treating delayed and non-union. However there is still much to learn about the complex processes of fracture healing, and why it fails in some patients despite the management by ‘state of the art’ surgery employing, for example, minimally invasive osteosynthesis, locking implants, exogenous growth factor application, and 3D printed biomaterials and stem cells for the reconstruction of critical sized defects. Even so, in a proportion of fracture patients, endogenous factors predispose to impaired fracture healing. The pivotal role of immunity in fracture healing and bone regeneration was one such endogenous factor under discussion at the symposium. The immune system has direct involvement in guiding all stages of fracture healing starting with inflamImmune System and Bone Regeneration

CRYSTALLIZATION AND SINTERABILITY BEHAVIOR OF BIORESORBABLE CaO-P2O5-Na2O-TiO2 GLASS CERAMICS FOR BONE REGENERATION APPLICATION
Abstract:Some types of glass and glass ceramics have a great potential for making bone tissue engineering scaffolds, drug carrier and bone cements as they can bond to host bone, stimulate bone cells toward osteogenesis, and resorb at the same time as the bone is repaired. Calcium phosphate glass ceramics have very attractive properties that allow them to use in bone tissue engineering. Calcium ...
متن کاملRegulatory T cell-mediated anti-inflammatory effects promote successful tissue repair in both indirect and direct manners
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) offer new immunotherapeutic options to control undesired immune reactions, such as those in transplant rejection and autoimmunity. In addition, tissue repair and regeneration depend on a multitude of tightly regulated immune and non-immune cells and signaling molecules. There is mounting evidence that adequate innate responses, and even more importantly balanced adapt...
متن کاملSuppression of the immune system as a critical step for bone formation from allogeneic osteoprogenitors implanted in rats
The surface marker profile of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) suggests that they can escape detection by the immune system of an allogeneic host. This could be an optimal strategy for bone regeneration applications, where off-the-shelf cells could be implanted to heal bone defects. However, it is unknown how pre-differentiation of MSCs to an osteogenic lineage, a means of improving bone format...
متن کاملImmune modulation as a therapeutic strategy in bone regeneration
We summarize research approaches and findings on bone healing and regeneration that were presented at a workshop at the 60th annual meeting of the Orthopedic Research Society (ORS) in New Orleans in 2014. The workshop was designed to discuss the role of inflammation in bone regeneration in the context of fundamental biology, and to develop therapeutic strategies that involve immune modulation. ...
متن کاملPharmacological targeting of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal/stem cells for the treatment of hematological disorders
The therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) are mainly based on three characteristics: immunomodulation, tissue regeneration, and hematopoietic support. Cell therapy using culture-expanded MSCs is effective in some intractable bone and hemato-immune disorders; however, its efficacy is limited. In this article, we review the previous efforts to improve the clinical outcomes ...
